Case Details

Disease Location

Kidney

Personal Characteristics

66-year-old woman. History of recurrent urinary tract infections, arthritis, hypertension, and migraines

Clinical Characteristics

Was incidentally found to have a small left-sided renal mass on non-contrast magnetic resonance imaging performed for assessment of new-onset back pain. CT demonstrated an enhancing left-sided anteromedial renal mass measuring 2.3 x 1.7 cm. Renal mass biopsy with CT guidance revealed a low-grade renal cell carcinoma (rcc) with oncocytic features. The patient underwent an uncomplicated robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy.

Remission Characteristics

Surgical pathology revealed lymphohistiocytic inflammation without evidence of viable tumor cells. Additionally, eosinophilic ghost cells without nuclei were observed, suggestive of spontaneous tumor regression

Treatment & Mechanisms

Proposed Remission Mechanisms

The release of tumor antigens may have contributed to the regression of the mass.

Clinical Treatment

Biopsy, partial nephrectomy
