Case Details

Disease Location

Liver

Personal Characteristics

48-year-old male. History of hepatitis b infection and chronic hepatitis d

Clinical Characteristics

His alanine aminotransferase (alt) levels were elevated. His platelet count was low. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen showed nodularity and borderline splenomegaly. Initial liver biopsy showed chronic hepatitis d (chd) with positive staining for hepatitis d antigen, marked viral activity, and portal fibrotic expansion

Remission Characteristics

3 years later, on a routine follow-up, he tested negative for hdv RNA. Liver biopsy a year after clearance of hdv showed improvement in inflammation, with no hepatitis d antigen detected on staining.

Treatment & Mechanisms

Proposed Remission Mechanisms

A plausible mechanism could be increased expression of interferon-stimulated genes leading to a robust innate immune response.
