192 cases of pulmonary resections for bronchogenic carcinoma performed at roswell park memorial institute postoperative empyema observed in 14 cases among patients WHO did not develop empyema, surgical mortality rate 16% tumors of 5 years survivors more differentiated than those of patients WHO survived less than 5 years after operation onset of empyema occurred over wide range of time (from early as second postoperative day to 3 mths after operation)
Remission Characteristics
Empyema after resection of bronchogenic carcinoma tends to give greater chance of survival
Treatment & Mechanisms
Proposed Remission Mechanisms
Possible factor is effect of empyema--> a follow-up is investigating the effect of superimposing infections on malignant tumors
Clinical Treatment
Pulmonary resection for bronchogenic carcinoma
