Abstract

This case report concerns the spontaneous closure of a middle cerebral arteriovenous fistula, lesions which are normally treated by surgery or interventional therapy. We have been unable to find any previous report of spontaneous closure of a similar fistula.

Case Details

Disease Location

Vein of galen

Personal Characteristics

A 45 years old female with a long history of epilepsy.

Clinical Characteristics

3 years history of bifrontal headache and right sided earache. Loss of balance. Low hearing on right side. Intracranial fistula between temporal branch of the middle cerebral artery and a large sylvian vein draining into the transverse sinus.

Remission Characteristics

7 days after diagnosis, the tinnitus stopped with severe pain in the right temporal region. Angiogram demonstrated spontaneous closure of the fistula, with normal filling of the branches of the middle cerebral artery.

Treatment & Mechanisms

Proposed Remission Mechanisms

Spontaneous thrombosis during cerebral angiography. Angiogram hastened the natural process of spontaneous thrombosis within the fistula.

Clinical Treatment

Balloon occlusion.
