Abstract

Spontaneous rupture of the lens capsule in hypermature morgagnian cataract is rare. A case report with photographs of spontaneous resorption of the lens cortex and clear pupil without secondary glaucoma or cyclitis is presented.

Case Details

Personal Characteristics

80-year-old female patient, known diabetes mellitus for about 10 years

Clinical Characteristics

Mature cataract on both sides, intracapsular cataract extraction on the right side performed without complications 17 years ago, definitive aphacial correction (+10.0 sph right) eight weeks later, vision of 1.25, reported improved vision in left eye over recent years, eye without irritation and pain

Remission Characteristics

Spontaneous rupture of the lens capsule, spontaneous resorption of the lens cortex and clear pupil without secondary glaucoma or cyclitis

Patient had not seen an optician since the treatment, although a cataract extraction on the left side at a later time had been recommended to her
