Sialograms of an 18-year-old female patient known to suffer from juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP) disclosed the destructive glandular changes typical of the disease. During the 10 years subsequent to the sialographic examination, the patient did not experience any further attacks of JRP. Sialograms carried out when the patient was 28 years of age demonstrated a normal gland. This case illustrates that a damaged parotid gland is capable of regeneration following JRP.
Case Details
Personal Characteristics
Mrs m., 56 years old, diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (sle), negative rheumatoid factor test
Clinical Characteristics
Large, ugly, numerous warts mainly on the dorsal aspect of both hands, with a few on the palmar surfaces
Remission Characteristics
Warts started to shrink and one or two of the smaller ones regressed completely after about six months treatment. After ten months treatment the only wart remaining was the suggested one on the ring finger. After another two months the remaining wart had gone, following appropriate hypnotic suggestion, a total of one year of hypnosis and 36 sessions. Two years later there have been no recurrences
Treatment & Mechanisms
Proposed Remission Mechanisms
Hypnosis, possibly through a neurogenic mechanism involving the sympathetic nervous system and sweat glands
Clinical Treatment
Local applications of liquid nitrogen every three or four weeks, curettage and cauterization with the electric cautery, applications of salactol, callusolve, and posalfilin
Non-Clinical Treatment
Hypnosis
Additional Notes
Patient was taking enteric coated prednisolone tablets, 2.5 milligrams four times a day for about four years on account of a diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
