Case Details

Personal Characteristics

A 25-year-old woman

Clinical Characteristics

Tightness, thickening, and itching of the skin, poikilodermatous sclerosis, alopecic due to scarring, cachexia, ulceration and induration of a giant congenital melanocytic nevus

Remission Characteristics

The nevus became sclerotic and paler by 13 months of age

Treatment & Mechanisms

Proposed Remission Mechanisms

Cases of spontaneous resolution of these lesions may represent a vigorous host response against an aberrant clone of melanocytes

Clinical Treatment

Blood transfusion at age 7 months and numerous topical and systemic antiinfective agents from 2 1/2 to 14 months of age

Additional Notes

The patient was unaware that she had ever had a giant pigmented nevus
